Midjourney generates images from text descriptions and is widely treated as the gold standard for artistic quality. Run the same prompt through it and through other tools, and the difference in composition, lighting, and overall feel is usually obvious.

But it comes at a cost, literally and figuratively: there’s no free tier, and you have to learn prompt writing to reach the results you see online.

What sets it apart

1. Create a Discord account (free) or use the Midjourney web app directly
2. Subscribe to a plan (starting around $10/month)
3. Type /imagine followed by your image description
4. You get four options you can upscale or regenerate
5. Use parameters to fine-tune the result

Writing better prompts

The gap between an ordinary image and a striking one is all in the description. Use this structure:

Subject + details + artistic style + lighting + camera angle + mood

Weak: “a cat” Strong: “a black cat asleep on an old wooden windowsill, golden hour light, realistic photography, shallow depth of field, warm quiet mood”

• Name the style: oil painting, photography, digital art, anime, 3D render
• Name the lighting: natural light, studio lighting, neon, sunset
• Use parameters: aspect ratio and stylization level change results substantially
• Iterate: the perfect image rarely appears on the first try

Who it’s for

A good fit if you’re a designer or digital artist, need artwork for commercial projects, are a content creator wanting distinctive visuals, or are willing to invest time in learning prompts.

Not a good fit if you want to try before paying, need ready-made template designs (Canva fits better), want quick simple images without a learning curve, or need accurate text inside images (still a general weakness in these tools).

Limits and warnings

No free trial — you pay from the start.

Text inside images usually comes out garbled, especially Arabic.

Images are public by default on standard plans; privacy requires Pro.

Commercial use: review the official terms, and note that AI image rights remain legally unsettled in many jurisdictions.

Alternatives

Canva AI is far easier and partly free, but lower in artistic quality. ChatGPT generates images on paid plans and is simpler to use. If artistic quality is your absolute priority, Midjourney remains the strongest.
