Frequently Asked Questions
Does compressing reduce image quality?
Yes — compression discards detail your eye normally does not notice. At 80% most images drop to half their size or less with no visible difference. Push the quality much lower and you will start to see noise around edges and text.
Why does it sometimes say my image cannot be compressed?
Because this tool never hands back a file larger than the one you gave it. If your image is already well compressed, every attempt comes out bigger than the original, so we say so plainly instead of giving you a worse file.
What happens to images with a transparent background?
Transparency is detected automatically and JPEG is never suggested in auto mode, because JPEG has no alpha channel and would turn the transparent background black. If you pick JPEG yourself we warn you first and fill the background with white rather than black.
Why does WebP usually win?
WebP compresses harder than JPEG at roughly the same quality, and it is the only format here that supports transparency and lossy compression at once. Every current browser displays it. If yours cannot encode it, the option is removed automatically.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. Everything happens inside your browser — the image never leaves your device, and there is no daily usage limit.
What happens to EXIF data and GPS location?
It is removed. Re-encoding strips all attached metadata, including GPS coordinates and camera model. That is useful if you are publishing the image, but worth knowing if you need to keep that data.
Why is my photo not rotated sideways like on other sites?
Because this tool reads the EXIF orientation flag before processing. Many tools ignore it, which is why phone photos so often come back lying on their side.
