Go to perplexity.ai and type your question straight into the search box — you can try it without signing in for a limited number of daily searches. The difference from ChatGPT: Perplexity searches the web live for every question rather than answering from stored knowledge, so phrasing your question as a clear research request (not casual conversation) yields more accurate results.
Note: For questions that need pulling information from several sources — price comparisons, product reviews — Perplexity is far faster than opening multiple Google tabs yourself.
Step 2: Set Focus before you search
Before sending your question, choose Focus to restrict source types: Academic for peer-reviewed research, Reddit for real user opinions, News for current events, or the open web. Picking the right source type changes answer quality substantially — a medical question benefits from Academic focus; a question about a product experience benefits from Reddit.
Note: Forgot to set Focus and got results that are too generic? Re-ask after selecting the right Focus instead of trying to filter the results by hand.
Step 3: Open the sources — don't stop at the answer
Every sentence in a Perplexity answer is numbered and linked to a reference you can click open. A citation number doesn't automatically mean the source is reliable — sometimes it cites a random blog or an outdated article.
