How to use it

Tips for better results
- Comment before you code. A clear comment above an empty function is the single most effective way to steer a suggestion
- Keep related files open — Copilot reads open tabs for context, so the relevant model or type definition being open changes what you get
- Reserve chat for genuine questions now that it’s metered; use completions for the routine typing
- Review, never trust. It writes plausible code confidently, including code that references APIs that don’t exist
- Add a
.github/copilot-instructions.mdto encode your project’s conventions once instead of repeating them
Who it’s for
A good fit if you already have an editor you like, write boilerplate-heavy code, work across several languages, are a student (it’s free), or want AI assistance without changing how you work.
Not a good fit if you want an AI that drives large architectural refactors — Cursor and Windsurf are built for that — or if your work is mostly in niche languages where suggestion quality drops off.
Limits and warnings
Credits run out. Since the June 2026 billing change, chat and agent usage is metered. Heavy chat users hit the ceiling before month-end on the $10 plan.
It writes confident wrong code, including calls to functions that don’t exist. Every suggestion needs reading before it’s accepted.
Check your training data setting on individual plans before using it on proprietary work.
Alternatives
Cursor is the stronger choice for large multi-file work and is the most common upgrade path. Windsurf offers a similar agent-first approach with a cleaner interface. Claude is better when you want code explained, reviewed, or critiqued rather than autocompleted.

Copilot if you like your current editor and want AI added to it. Cursor if you'll switch editors to get deeper AI integration. Cursor is stronger at multi-file changes and large refactors; Copilot is stronger at staying out of your way while you type. Many developers run Copilot for completions and reach for a separate tool on bigger tasks.
Is the free plan actually usable?
For light work, yes — 2,000 completions a month covers a hobby project or occasional scripting. If you code daily you'll exhaust it in the first week. Students get a much better deal: full access free through the GitHub Student Developer Pack.
What changed with the credit billing?
Since June 2026 all plans bill chat, agent mode, code review, and CLI against a credit pool tied to token usage. Prices stayed the same but heavy chat users hit limits they didn't before. Inline completions and next-edit suggestions were left unmetered on paid plans, which is the part most people use most.
Does my code get used for training?
Not on Business and Enterprise plans, where that's off by default. On individual plans it's a setting you should check — it's in your GitHub Copilot settings and worth reviewing before you point it at anything proprietary.
Which languages does it handle best?
Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, Go, and C# are where it's strongest, simply because that's where the training data is. It works with less common languages but suggestion quality drops noticeably, and you'll spend more time correcting than accepting.
