Cursor isn’t an extension you add to your editor — it’s a full editor built on VS Code with AI woven through it. The practical difference is that it reads your project as a whole: it knows the file structure, the imports, and the patterns you use, so its suggestions fit your codebase rather than a generic one.
That makes it powerful and dangerous at once. Powerful because it collapses hours of work; dangerous because a suggestion that looks right and slips through easily is far riskier than one that breaks immediately.

Everything below assumes the code you’re working on is yours or that you’re permitted to share it. If it’s company code, review the privacy policy and turn on Privacy Mode before your first line.
Steps
Step 1: Install it and bring your settings over
Download Cursor from its official site. Because it's built on VS Code, the first launch offers to import your extensions, keybindings, and theme in one click. Accept — you get your familiar environment intact, with nothing to reconfigure.
Note: If the prompt doesn't appear, it's in the command palette: press Ctrl+Shift+P and type Import.
Step 2: Understand the four modes
Tab completes the line or block you're typing and applies with one keystroke. Inline (Ctrl+K) edits the selected code from an instruction you type. Chat (Ctrl+L) is for questions and discussion without direct edits. Agent carries out a whole task across multiple files on its own. Start with the first two and hold off on Agent until reviewing diffs is second nature.
Note: The shortcuts are the difference between a fast tool and an annoying one. Learn Ctrl+K and Ctrl+L on day one.
Step 3: Give it your project's context instead of explaining every time
Use @ inside the chat box to reference a file, folder, or symbol: @src/api/users.ts makes it read that file before answering. This is the single most valuable habit to build — a question without context gets a generic answer, while a question with two related files gets an answer that fits your codebase.
Note: You can reference terminal errors the same way, so it reads the full error message rather than your paraphrase of it.
Step 4: Write a project rules file
Create an AGENTS.md or .cursor/rules file at your project root and write down the rules you want followed: language, naming conventions, banned libraries, error-handling approach, whether to write comments. Cursor reads it automatically on every request, so you stop repeating the same instructions.
Note: Keep the rules short and specific. Twenty clear lines beat two hundred vague ones.
Step 5: Review every edit before accepting it
Cursor shows its changes as a red/green diff. Don't accept on autopilot. Read the change line by line, especially in files you didn't open yourself. A suggestion can work and break something else at the same time — that's the most common way beginners get burned.
Note: Work on a separate Git branch while experimenting with Agent. Undoing becomes one command instead of a manual cleanup.
Step 6: Use it to explain, not just to write
The most valuable use for a beginner isn't generating code — it's understanding it. Select any complex function, press Ctrl+L and ask: 'Explain step by step what this does and which cases could make it fail.' That saves hours for anyone working in a codebase they didn't write.
Note: Ask 'what are the alternatives here and what are the downsides of each?' — you'll learn more than by accepting the first suggestion.

Is Cursor free?
There's a free plan with a limited number of AI requests per month, enough for trying it out and small projects. Serious daily use needs a paid subscription. Check the official pricing page for current numbers.
Does it work with any language?
Yes, anything VS Code supports. Quality is highest in common languages like JavaScript, TypeScript, and Python, and lower in niche languages or very new frameworks.
Is my code sent to their servers?
By default yes, since processing happens in the cloud. There's a Privacy Mode that prevents code storage. If you work on proprietary code, enable it and review the tool's policy with your team before using it.
I'm a complete beginner — will relying on it hurt me?
It will if you use it as a substitute for understanding. Use it as an explainer and reviewer first: write the code yourself, then ask it to review and explain your mistakes. Used that way it accelerates learning rather than stunting it.
How is it different from GitHub Copilot?
