Frequently Asked Questions
Which audio formats does the tool support?
Anything your browser can decode — usually WAV, MP3 and Ogg, and often M4A/AAC as well. The output is always uncompressed WAV, just like the trim tool. We verify the file before decoding regardless of its name.
Why is the output WAV?
Because WAV with PCM data is the reliable, fully deterministic way to export decoded audio in the browser without depending on MediaRecorder. WAV works everywhere; the price is a large file for long clips, and we say so rather than hide it.
What does the limiter do?
When you push the gain above the original peak, some samples exceed the ceiling and get clipped, which causes distortion. The limiter scales down the whole signal so the peak lands exactly at the ceiling without clipping — preserving dynamics while lifting the quiet parts. Turn it off and you gain more loudness, but anything above 100% distorts, and we tell you when it does.
How do I know if the audio will distort?
The tool measures the signal peak before and after boosting. If the post-boost peak hits 100% with the limiter off, an explicit warning appears saying the signal was clipped. With the limiter on, the peak stays at 100% and the warning disappears.
Can I preview the result before saving?
Yes. The play button plays back the boosted audio exactly as it will come out of the WAV file — same samples — so you never save a file only to discover the problem later.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No, not for a moment. Decoding, gain staging, previewing and exporting all happen entirely inside your browser; your file never leaves your device.
