Frequently Asked Questions

Can this open a PDF whose password I do not know?

No, and no honest tool can. Removing the password requires decrypting the file, and decrypting it requires the password. Anything advertising itself as a PDF password "cracker" is either guessing common passwords, uploading your document to a server, or both. This tool needs the password from you and does all its work on your own device.

Is anything lost when the password is removed?

Some things, yes, and it is only fair to say so. Removing encryption means rebuilding the document, so bookmarks, form fields, attachments, digital signatures and document metadata do not survive. The pages themselves — text, images, layout — come through exactly as they were. If your file depends on any of those extras, keep the original.

Does my password reach your servers?

No. Decryption happens entirely in your browser. Neither the file nor the password is transmitted anywhere, which is exactly why it is reasonable to type a password into this page.

Why does it say the password is wrong when I am sure it is right?

PDFs can carry two passwords: a user password that opens the document and an owner password that governs permissions. Either will work here. If both fail, the file may use an encryption method our in-browser library does not support, in which case a desktop PDF reader is the better route.
